Zahora has just added a new name to its culinary map, and it has arrived in style. Malavaca is here to revolutionise the food scene in this part of Cádiz with a bold proposition: top-quality grilled meats and wood-fired pizzas. And if even Iker Casillas has dropped by to try it, there must be something to it.
Fire and dough: Malavaca's two pillars
The concept is clear from the name. Malavaca relies on two elements that never fail: fire and dough. Wood fire takes centre stage—the factor that makes the difference between an ordinary piece of meat and an experience that makes you close your eyes with every bite.
Opened in summer 2024, the restaurant has carved out a place in an area where fish normally receives all the applause. Here they decided to put meat centre stage, and they have done it properly.

The menu: when meat is queen
If you are a carnivore, Malavaca is paradise. The menu showcases premium beef including veal and Retinta, aged beef, Morucha, Simmental and Rubia Gallega. From each, you can choose fillet, ribeye or sirloin. The meats are carefully aged and grilled to precisely the right point.
One dish in particular has everyone talking: the Iberian presa ingot. This spectacular cut arrives at the table sizzling and has won over even famous guests such as Iker Casillas, who was happy to pose with the team and share his visit online. It is easy to see why: respect for the ingredients, perfect cooking and the intense flavour that only fire can create.
Besides the ingot, the menu includes Iberian pluma, suckling lamb, sweetbreads, the famous beef ribs slow-cooked and finished over the flames, and coquelet. Gourmet-burger fans can order the Vacaburger: freshly minced and mixed Morucha ribeye, Arzúa-Ulloa cheese, mushroom slices and shavings of duck-foie mi-cuit. Nothing like an ordinary burger.
Each meat comes with a garnish of your choice—from classic chips to roast sweet-potato purée or Padrón peppers—and a sauce selected by you: chimichurri, tarragon with wholegrain mustard and other options that enhance every bite.
And with around three rotating specials added each week, there is always an excuse to return.

Malavaca is not only about meat
Although the grill is the star, Malavaca has not forgotten diners looking for something else. Wood-fired pizzas have a prominent place on the menu and are made with house-made dough and bread. You will also find fresh fish and shellfish, local cheeses and plant-based options that enrich the selection.
Wines that rise to the occasion
Malavaca's cellar pays tribute to good wine. Highlights include Azpilicueta Rioja Blanco 2023—fresh, fruity and perfect for summer—and Azpilicueta Crianza 2021, rounded, balanced and ideal with grilled meats. The selection is designed to give every dish its perfect partner in the glass.
The space: spacious and welcoming
The premises are spacious and bright, with capacity for events of up to 150 people. The décor blends rustic and contemporary elements, creating a relaxed setting where the food takes centre stage. There is also private parking, always welcome in a tourist area.
Open all year round
Unlike many local venues that close outside the season, Malavaca intends to stay open throughout the year. It also organises activities to keep things interesting: a tapas and montaditos menu, Christmas menus and, once a month, an eight-course menu paired with eight wines. This goes far beyond a conventional restaurant.
Zahora: the peaceful neighbour of Los Caños
Malavaca is in Pago Zahora, on the road to Los Caños de Meca. Zahora is the long, wild beach just a stone's throw from Los Caños but with a quieter, less crowded feel—perfect for switching off without giving up the good life.
The area has all the charm of the most authentic Cádiz: unspoilt beaches, dunes, pine trees reaching almost to the water and an endless horizon that makes every worry disappear.
How to get there
It is easy to reach from Cádiz (around 60 km) or Jerez (just over 100 km) via the CA-2143. Once in the Los Caños–Zahora area, Malavaca is at Pago Zahora 291 on the main road. It has private parking, so there is no need to circle around looking for a space.
Booking is essential
This is not the kind of place where you can always turn up and find a table. Malavaca has become fashionable, and rightly so. Call ahead on 638 79 33 57 or book through its website. Tables go quickly, especially during high season and at weekends.
What to do after your feast
If you stay in the area—and believe me, you will want to—make the most of it by:
- Wandering along Zahora's beaches: kilometres of sand where you can walk without meeting almost anyone
- Visiting Los Caños de Meca, just a few minutes away, with its bohemian atmosphere and legendary sunsets
- Going to Trafalgar Lighthouse, witness to one of the most famous naval battles in history
- Exploring La Breña and Barbate Marshes Natural Park
- Heading up to Vejer de la Frontera, one of Spain's most beautiful white towns
- Trying almadraba tuna in Barbate if you still feel like fish
The verdict
Malavaca is here to stay and change the rules of the game. In an area where fish normally reigns supreme, it has backed meat—and done so well that people now drive to Zahora specifically to try its grills.
It is not pretentious, does not seek a Michelin star and does not try to reinvent the wheel. It simply takes good ingredients, treats them with respect, grills them as they should be grilled and serves them in a relaxed setting where you feel at ease. In an age when everything tries to be excessively modern or over-fused, that is refreshing.
The Iberian presa ingot is already legendary. The gourmet burgers have a loyal following. The pizzas add further options. And everything works because the team knows what it is doing and treats guests well.
If you are passing through Zahora or Los Caños, Malavaca is an essential stop. After a day of beach and salty air, nothing beats sitting down to good grilled meat, a decent glass of wine and the carefree atmosphere found only in this corner of Cádiz.
Welcome, Malavaca. Zahora was hungry for something like this.
